When Diego leaves Argentina-Iran early, all hell breaks loose

As if the World Cup doesn’t have enough pressure or distractions, Argentina’s most famous footballer and the president of its football association are currently engaged in a public feud. While no stranger to controversy, Diego Maradona has responded to Julio Grondona, a senior vice president at FIFA and president of the Argentinian Football Association, who called the legend a “bad-luck charm” in the wake of Saturday’s drama at the Estádio Mineirão in Belo Horizonte.

After Lionel Messi’s late heroics against Bosnia-Herzegovina, the heir to Maradona’s throne produced another moment of magic, scoring a spectacular winning goal in stoppage time.

Unbeknownst to Messi, Maradona had already left the stadium, presumably to beat traffic, but possibly because he doesn’t believe in miracles. This coincidence prompted Grondona to accuse Maradona of being a jinx.

Appearing on Telesur, a left-leaning Venezuelan network, Maradona responded: “The clothes I have on my back I bought them through hard work. What he has on he got from FIFA and I’ll end it here.” Maradona, staring directly into the camera, raised his middle finger, and said, “Jinx this.”
